NAPTIP Reacts as Old Simi Tweets Trend Online

Nigerian singer Simi is facing renewed scrutiny after old tweets from 2012 and 2013 resurfaced online.

The posts were written when she was in her early twenties, at a time she was assisting at her mother’s daycare while trying to break into the music industry.

Over the past few days, screenshots of those tweets have circulated widely, with some social media users interpreting parts of them as inappropriate and calling for authorities to step in.

As the conversation gained momentum, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) issued a statement saying it would examine any credible reports related to child protection concerns.

The agency encouraged anyone with factual evidence to come forward, stressing that action would only follow substantial findings. No charges have been filed.

In response, Simi denied any wrongdoing and described the tweets as light hearted reflections from her time working with children.

She maintained that they were never written with harmful intent and reiterated her longstanding stance against sexual violence.

The unfolding situation has since sparked wider debate about how historical social media posts are reinterpreted years later, especially when viewed through a different cultural lens.
