New Winnie Mandela Documentary Set for Netflix Release

A new documentary on Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will premiere later this month, bringing a more personal side of her story to the screen.

The seven-part series, The Trials Of Winnie Mandela, follows her granddaughters, Zaziwe Manaway and Swati Mandela-Dlamini, as they explore her life beyond public perception.

The late filmmaker Mandy Jacobson directed the project, shaping a story that highlights both her achievements and the controversies around her legacy.

Indelible Media partnered with The African Oral History Archive to produce the series.

The documentary premieres on Netflix on April 23, 2026, and early reactions show strong interest in its family-driven approach.

The series offers a closer look at one of Africa’s most influential and debated figures.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela, lived from 1936 to 2018.

She stood as one of South Africa’s strongest voices during the anti-apartheid struggle.

Many called her the “Mother of the Nation.”

As the second wife of Nelson Mandela, she kept his name alive during his 27 years in prison. She also kept the fight for freedom in the public eye.

Her legacy remains one of strength, resistance and lasting impact.
