Omah Lay Says Lagos Remains the Heart of the Afrobeats Industry
Omah Lay has spoken about the challenges he faced while trying to break into the Afrobeats industry.
The Nigerian singer explained that Lagos remains the center of the genre and plays a major role in shaping the sound and culture of Afrobeats.
He also pointed to the influence of music icon Fela Kuti, whose work helped lay the foundation for the movement.
Omah Lay said musicians from outside Lagos often need to prove themselves in the city before gaining recognition in the industry.
The singer, who comes from Port Harcourt, noted that only a few artistes from the city have managed to reach a global audience. Among them are himself and Burna Boy.
He added that moving to Lagos helped him establish his place in the industry, even though he was not originally from the city.
