Omara Daniel Defends Tribal Humor in Ugandan Comedy

Ugandan stand-up comedian Omara Daniel has defended the use of tribal humor in the local comedy scene, arguing that while some may not approve, it mirrors our identity and the stereotypes can be amusing.

Rather than calling for the total elimination of tribal humor, Omara suggests that the focus should be on refining its quality.

He compared Uganda’s use of tribal humor to the racial humor often seen in American comedy, stating that it would be unrealistic to ask American comedians to stop making jokes about race.

Similarly, he believes that Ugandan comedians cannot fully avoid referencing tribes, as they are a significant part of who we are.

Omara warned that banning tribal humor would further restrict the already limited range of topics available to comedians in the country.

Instead, he advocates for elevating the standard of tribal humor, making it clever and thoughtful rather than “dumb.”
