Our Era Had and Still Has the Best Music in East Africa – Diamond Oscar

Mbabali Oscar, popularly known as Diamond Oscar, is the latest artiste to voice his concerns about the current state of Ugandan music.

The “Nkyali Bubi” singer shared his thoughts during a podcast conversation with Lugaflow legend GNL Zamba, reflecting on the difference between music from his era and what is being produced today.

According to him, music from his time was more powerful, meaningful, and resonated deeply with audiences across the continent.

“Our era had and still has the best music in East Africa,” he said.

Diamond Oscar went on to praise iconic musicians like Radio & Weasel, Jose Chameleone, Sweet Kid, and Wasswa Jamal, saying they created timeless music that left a lasting impression on listeners.

He believes that when people hear those songs today, they still evoke strong memories and emotions.

In his view, this emotional connection is missing in the current wave of Ugandan music.

The veteran singer also took aim at the new generation of musicians, criticizing their lack of drive and passion compared to his peers.

“The current generation has got no momentum like we got,” he said.

He added that many of today’s artistes are still struggling to create music that can stand the test of time, saying, “They still have a very big problem.”

With these remarks, Diamond Oscar joins other established artistes like A Pass, Mun G, and Naira Ali, who have also expressed disappointment with the direction Ugandan music is taking.
