People Want AI Designs in Real Life, Fashion Designer Kaijuka Laments

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now part of everyday life, and the fashion industry is feeling its impact too.

Amid this shift, Ugandan fashion designer Abbas Kaijuka has shared his concerns about the growing use of AI in fashion, saying it has created more problems than solutions for designers like him.

He explained that AI-generated outfit designs are creating unrealistic expectations among clients.

According to him, some clients bring in AI-made designs and expect designers to recreate them exactly, even when they are not practical in real life.

It has become a problem for us because people get these outfits that are made with AI and they want you to make a replica, to make the exact thing. It is very hard to recreate something that is AI-generated. Some of them are not even realistic. Some even have fabrics you have never seen in your life. Then someone says they want something exactly like that.

Speaking to NBS After 5, he also revealed that he has no plans to start using AI himself.

He made it crystal clear that he prefers to stay true to his own style and creative process.

AI has made our work very complicated. I will not say that it has been of any advantage to me. I do not even want to use it. I want to stay true to myself.

Even so, Kaijuka admitted that AI is not going anywhere.

Though it brings challenges, he believes people in the industry may have no choice but to adjust to it.

AI is bringing problems to us, but there is nothing to do. We have embrace it.
