President Ruto Appoints Comedian to Key Government Role

Popular Kenyan comedian Vincent Mwasia Mutua, widely known as Chipukeezy, has been appointed as the Deputy Director of Protocol and Events in the Office of the President of Kenya.

The announcement, made on Wednesday, has sparked widespread discussion, with many congratulating the entertainer-turned-public servant on his new role.

Chipukeezy, known for his humor and charismatic stage presence, expressed his gratitude to President William Ruto for the appointment.

Taking to social media, he shared his excitement and commitment to his new duties. “Deputy Director Protocol and Events, Office of the President: I am truly humbled and ready to serve. When the time is right, God will make it happen. Thank you, His Excellency. @williamsamoeiruto 🙏,” he wrote.

His appointment was also confirmed by Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, who praised Chipukeezy’s contributions to the creative sector.

“Congratulations on your appointment as Assistant Director, Protocol and Events in the Executive Office of the President!” Itumbi posted on X (formerly Twitter), referencing a Bible verse and encouraging him to serve with dedication.

Chipukeezy’s role will involve overseeing key aspects of state functions, including protocol management, event coordination, and communication with government agencies and diplomats.

His responsibilities will also extend to speech preparation, media coordination, and the reception of foreign dignitaries.

The comedian’s long-standing association with President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, where he frequently served as an MC at official events, is seen as a factor in his selection.

Previously, he held a government role as a board member at the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

Born and raised in Tala, Machakos County, Chipukeezy’s rise to prominence began through local theatre productions before transitioning into mainstream comedy. His career has now taken a significant turn, merging entertainment with public service.

Reactions to his appointment have been mixed. While many in the creative industry see it as a win for artistes seeking recognition in governance, others have questioned whether a comedian’s background aligns with the formal demands of a protocol office.

The move also raises broader discussions about the evolving relationship between Kenya’s creative sector and government.
