Promoters Storm Gender Ministry Over UGX 33 Billion Fund

Tension erupted at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development when a group of events promoters, led by veteran promoter Abtex, demanded inclusion in the government’s 33 billion shilling fund meant to support the arts and entertainment sector.

Speaking to journalists after meeting ministry officials, Abtex expressed shock and frustration, saying they were told promoters were “not recognized” and “not in the budget.”

We came to the Ministry of Gender because we thought we belonged here. But we are shocked they do not know us, and we are not on the list. This is intentional, and we shall not stay silent or do nothing. We demand our share.

The promoters insist they play a critical role in Uganda’s entertainment industry, investing heavily in events that employ thousands of people, from artistes and technicians to vendors and security personnel.

They accuse the ministry of sidelining them while allocating funds to other categories in the creative sector.

The group vowed to continue pushing until they receive formal recognition and a portion of the government funding.
