Rasta Rob Says Shock Value Has Replaced Meaningful Romantic Hits
Legendary Ugandan DJ and radio presenter Rasta Rob is not impressed with the direction today’s music is taking.
While appearing on The Beat, the outspoken cultural figure took aim at what he described as the slow disappearance of romantic, sweet love songs from the airwaves.
According to him, the industry has traded heartfelt lyrics for fast moving trends and quick attention.
He pointed to some of the songs currently making rounds.
Just look at all the songs flying around. “Tema Ensingo” by Kapeke, “Kapati Kapati,” absolutely nothing romantic about them. I do not know what has gone wrong.
Rasta Rob suggested that money and fast results are now driving creative choices.
I think people are looking for a shortcut to money, and those are the songs that sell quickly, club bangers, because you are talking about hitting somebody on the head, snatching someone’s phone, you know, things that are controversial.
In his view, shock value has replaced romance.
People are obsessed with controversy and sensationalism, and they then end up forgetting the romantic side of music.
For the veteran DJ, love songs once defined the sound of Uganda’s music scene.
Now, he believes controversy is setting the pace.
