Sama Soja Explains Why He Disagrees With Being Called Underrated
Ugandan reggae and dancehall artiste Sama Soja, born Ivan Tony Kizito, has spent close to a decade steadily releasing music.
With tracks like “Akadde” and “Njiira Love,” he has built a catalogue that many fans and critics describe as consistent.
In fact, some in the industry often refer to him as underrated.
But the singer himself does not fully subscribe to that view.
While appearing on NBS Kurt, Sama Soja addressed the perception directly and explained why he does not see himself through that lens.
I would say I do not feel underrated because that is what nature has given me, and I have to accept it the way it has come. The way people consume me is exactly the way they should consume me.
He acknowledged that it can be challenging at times, especially when he feels he has done everything required on his part.
Still, he believes his role ends with creating and investing in meaningful music, while the rest depends on the audience.
Think about it. I make meaningful music, so instead of asking me why people do not embrace me, ask the people themselves why they do not embrace me. It challenges me as well because I do what I have to do. I make good music, I invest a lot, I put my music where it has to be, and it is the duty of people who enjoy good things to consume it.
The conversation also turned to whether he feels comfortable with where he stands today.
For Samah Soja, growth in music never truly ends.
Of course I will never be okay because music does not have an epitome. Every day that goes by, you grow and keep doing new things. Even if I become a big artiste, I will still continue to grow.
