Sangster Airport Flooded as Hurricane Melissa Slams Jamaica
Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, has sustained visible damage and flooding as Hurricane Melissa continues to batter the island with heavy rain and strong winds.
A video circulating on social media, shared by The Shade Room, shows water pouring into parts of the airport’s interior, with ceiling panels collapsed and debris scattered across the waiting area.
The viral footage, reportedly taken by a traveler trapped inside the terminal, reveals the extent of the destruction as airport staff and passengers sought safety amid the chaos.
The Jamaica Meteorological Service had earlier placed several parishes, including St. James, under hurricane warnings as Melissa approached the island with wind speeds exceeding 120 kilometers per hour.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid coastal areas as emergency crews continue to assess the damage.
Flights in and out of Sangster International Airport have been suspended until further notice, with airlines advising travellers to check for updates before heading to the airport.
Hurricane Melissa has already caused widespread flooding, power outages, and property damage across parts of the Caribbean.
Regional disaster management teams remain on high alert as the storm moves northwest, with forecasts predicting further heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
