Shannon Sharpe Let Go by ESPN Following Lawsuit Settlement
Shannon Sharpe, Pro Football Hall of Famer and former “First Take” co-host, has been let go by ESPN after a months-long legal battle stemming from a sexual assault lawsuit.
The network’s decision follows a confidential settlement reached earlier this month between Sharpe and the plaintiff, who had accused him of rape, abuse, and emotional distress.
The lawsuit, filed in Nevada in April 2025, alleged that Sharpe engaged in a pattern of coercive and abusive behavior over a long-term relationship.
The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, sought $50 million in damages.
Sharpe denied the claims and described the relationship as consensual and complicated.
According to court documents, both parties ultimately agreed to settle out of court, and the case was dismissed with prejudice on July 18.
While terms of the settlement remain private, the outcome has effectively ended Sharpe’s tenure with ESPN.
Sharpe, 57, had taken a leave of absence from “First Take” shortly after the lawsuit became public.
At the time, ESPN expressed support for his decision to step back.
However, with the case now resolved, the network has opted not to bring him back.
In a recent episode of his “Nightcap” podcast, Sharpe acknowledged his exit and said he was “at peace” with how things turned out, though he expressed frustration that the news broke just days before his brother, Sterling Sharpe, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“I would have preferred the story came out later. That moment was about my brother. Not about me,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe rose to prominence as a 3-time Super Bowl champion and 8-time Pro Bowler before transitioning into media.
He became a household name in sports commentary, first on Fox Sports’ “Undisputed” and later on ESPN’s “First Take” alongside Stephen A. Smith.
Beyond television, Sharpe also built a sizable audience through his podcasts “Club Shay Shay” and “Nightcap.”
While ESPN has not issued an official statement regarding his departure, industry sources confirm that his contract will not be renewed.
Sharpe has not indicated whether he plans to pursue other television opportunities in the near future, though his independent platforms remain active.
