Shena Skies Says Writing for Beyoncé Still Would Not Satisfy Her

Ugandan singer Shena Skies, real name Namagembe Shena, has shared why performing means more to her than staying behind the scenes as a songwriter.

Often referred to as the “Original Queen of the Jungle,” Shena spoke during an interview with Horizon Vibe about discovering that singing and songwriting are two different paths.

Early in her career, she believed every singer had to do both.

When I started singing, I used to think that everyone who sings has to be a writer. I did not even think there had to be a distinction. But now that I know there is a distinction and If had to choose, obviously I would not be here talking to you if I did not want to be a musician.

As she grew in the industry, she realized that focusing only on writing songs for others would not give her the same fulfillment as being the one on stage, even if she were writing for global stars.

I can write over 10 songs for Beyoncé and still not be satisfied. No one who is behind someone will ever enjoy more than the person they are behind. Never.

Shena Skies also used the moment to share exciting news about her career.

After years of releasing EPs and singles, she is now ready to take a bigger step.

This year I am planning my album. For all the time I have spent in the industry, I have never done an album. I have been releasing small EPs and singles. So I am going to release my album called ‘Prescription’ because, for me, music soothes the soul.

While the release date is still under wraps, the upcoming album marks her move from isolated releases to a complete body of work.
