Sir Mathias Walukaga Breaks Down the Musician-to-Politician Trend

In recent years, Uganda has witnessed a significant shift, with more musicians moving beyond singing about political and social issues to actively running for political office.

This trend has sparked curiosity, with many wondering what drives these artistes to take this step.

One voice shedding light on this matter is singer-turned-politician Sir Mathias Walukaga, who argues that musicians’ involvement in politics is not as new as some might assume.

As the Kyengera Town Council Mayor, Walukaga pointed out that musicians have long incorporated political and social commentary into their songs.

Reflecting on his own journey, he noted that he has written over twenty songs addressing Uganda’s challenges throughout his career.

However, the question remains: Why are musicians actively seeking political office?

Walukaga believes it stems from a deepening desire for change.

He explained that for years, musicians have used their lyrics to highlight the issues they want to see resolved.

Frustrated by the lack of progress, many musicians feel compelled to take a more active role in politics to bring about the changes they have long advocated for.

Building on this idea, Walukaga urged Ugandans to support musicians vying for leadership roles, particularly those with a proven track record of addressing national concerns through their music.
