Sseggona Hints at Independent Run After NUP Snub
Talk is surrounding the National Unity Platform (NUP) following the issuing of party tickets ahead of the 2026 elections.
In Busiro East, seasoned politician Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona has spoken out after losing the NUP card to singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga.
Speaking to Sanyuka TV, Sseggona admitted the outcome was disappointing but insisted his political fire still burns bright.
I am still ambitious. If the party has chosen to trust Walukagga this time, I respect that, but I am capable of standing on my own. I might come out as an independent because my people still believe in me.
His remarks sparked debate, with some supporters praising his experience while others argued Walukaga’s popularity could give him an edge in mobilizing voters.
Analysts believe Sseggona’s independent bid could split the opposition vote, reshaping the race in Busiro East and possibly giving the ruling NRM an opening.
With the 2026 elections fast approaching, the big question is whether Sseggona will break away or back Walukaga for party unity.
Either way, Busiro East has become one of the contests to watch.
