Teacher Mpamire Opens Up: How Mimicking President Museveni Changed His Life
Ugandan comedy fans know him well: Teacher Mpamire, the comic genius who captured the nation’s attention with his spot-on imitations of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
But behind the laughs and applause lies a story of resilience, courage, and an unwavering passion for comedy.
In a revealing interview with Sanyuka Uncut, Teacher Mpamire opened up about the early days of his career and the mixed reactions he faced when he first started mimicking the president.
When I started imitating President Museveni, some people thought I was crazy. They said, ‘Eh! Mpamire! You will be arrested!’ Others said, ‘Why are you wasting your education making funny faces?’ But I told them, ‘Mute the noise!’ I gave them a deaf ear.
Despite the criticism, Mpamire stood firm in his belief that comedy should have a purpose.
We cannot follow comedians who do not have ideological direction!
His boldness paid off in the most unexpected way.
The very man he impersonates, President Museveni himself, became his biggest supporter.
Yes! He told me, ‘Young man, what you’re doing is unique. You are using comedy to educate, to entertain, and to inspire.’ That changed my life.
For Mpamire, comedy was never about chasing fame or fortune.
I did not want to become rich. I just wanted to become comedy itself. I wanted people to laugh, not just at jokes, but at real things in life: politics, school, even traffic jams!
Today, comedy has opened doors for him that few could have imagined.
He has traveled far and wide, met presidents, and even been mistaken for a dignitary himself.
I have even been called ‘Your Excellency’ by mistake! But above all, it has brought me purpose.
To those who doubted him at first, Mpamire sends a heartfelt message:
So, to all those who criticized me at first, I say thank you for the noise. It only made me focus more.
And to President Museveni, he offers gratitude for the unique opportunity to lead the country on stage.
Thank you for not only leading the country but for letting me ‘lead it for five minutes on stage.’
Teacher Mpamire’s story is a powerful reminder that laughter, when paired with courage and conviction, can truly change lives and even win the heart of a president.
