Tems Recalls Being Booed Off Stage Early in Her Career

Nigerian Grammy-winner Tems, real name Temilade Openiyi, has opened up about a difficult experience that shaped her early journey in music.

During an interview with Big Boy TV, she recalled performing at a school event where the reception was far from welcoming.

Expecting encouragement as an up and coming act, she instead faced boos from the crowd, along with plastic bottles thrown toward the stage.

I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receiving a standing ovation. But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me.

Rather than discouraging her, the moment forced her to confront the realities of pursuing a creative path.

Tems explained that staying true to her sound at a time when many artistes leaned into covers or familiar trends may have made it harder for audiences to connect with her.

Still, she refused to adjust her identity for approval.

Looking back, she now sees that rejection as a defining chapter, one that strengthened her resolve and laid the groundwork for the success she enjoys today.
