The End of an Era: MTV Is Shutting Down After 44 Years
MTV, the channel that shaped generations, will shut down its music channels on December 31, 2025.
Paramount Global confirmed that MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will be permanently shut down.
The closure will begin in the United Kingdom and Ireland before spreading to Europe, Australia, and Brazil.
The decision reflects changing media habits, with fans increasingly turning to social media and streaming platforms.
Paramount also cited cost-cutting measures and its merger with Skydance Media as factors behind the move.
While MTV will continue through digital platforms and major events such as the VMAs and EMAs, traditional music television, as audiences have known it, will end after New Year’s Eve 2025.
