Tracy Melon Shuts Down Vocal Comparisons, Says “I Want to Be Me”
Tracy Melon is not chasing studio battles.
In a music scene where fans often compare voices and vocal range, the Ugandan vocalist says she does not record with the aim of outsinging anyone.
Speaking on Flexx, she addressed the idea of stepping into the booth determined to hit notes better than another artiste.
That mindset, she explained, is simply not hers.
Not really. Me I just do my thing. Of course I listen to other artistes and I learn from them. I cannot say that I have never appreciated what another artiste has done and told myself, ‘I think I can also do that.’

For Tracy, appreciation and inspiration are part of the craft.
She added that, in music, similarities are inevitable, and drawing from others does not mean losing originality or copying.
I mean, we learn from each other. We do not necessarily copy. I will not say we copy, but you find that in the industry we are in, we do the same things. We sing the same lines, the same words. I could pick a line or a word from your lyrics, and I think that should be okay.
Still, she emphasized that imitation is not her goal, adding that she wants to remain as authentic as possible.
All I can say is that I learn from very many people. But I cannot be there and say, let me do it like so-and-so, because at the end of the day, I want to be me.
Asked whether she ever aims to do anything better than others, Tracy did not dismiss ambition.
That is a good thing, by the way, to want to be better than others.
