Uncle Chumi Defends TikTok, Questions Sheikh Mubaje’s Authority to Propose a Ban

Singer Uncle Chumi, who gained her breakthrough with the hit “Gwokutte Gwobba,” originally rose to prominence as a content creator on TikTok.

Recently, the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, called for the banning of TikTok in Uganda, criticizing the platform as a place for idle people, content seekers, and those with nothing meaningful to say.

When asked about her thoughts on his concerns in a media interview, Uncle Chumi made it clear that she does not know who Sheikh Mubaje is.

She questioned why a Sheikh would call for the banning of the platform, asking, “Has anyone read the Quran upside down on TikTok? If not, then what is the problem?”

She further wondered in what capacity he was speaking, adding that if he was the one who introduced TikTok to Uganda, then perhaps he could have it removed.

For her, however, banning TikTok is not the solution. She advised Sheikh Mubaje to connect with TikTok users to better understand how to navigate and use the platform.

According to Uncle Chumi, TikTok is for everyone, regardless of their status in society.

She highlighted how the platform provides easy access to news, among other benefits.

In conclusion, she stated that TikTok is necessary and expressed dissatisfaction over Sheikh Mubaje’s comments.
