Uncle Mo Responds to Claims His English Skits Leave Out Locals
Popular content creator Moses Kiboneka, also known as Uncle Mo, has addressed criticism over his decision to use English in most of his comedy skits.
Some people have argued that by using English, the comedian leaves out sections of the local audience who might connect more with content in local languages.
However, Uncle Mo says it comes down to audience preference and the fact that no single piece of content can appeal to everyone.
Speaking to Daily Soup, he said creators must accept early enough that their work will not appeal to every single person, even if that is the wish.
Anyone in our field needs to understand early enough that what we do is not for everyone, even though we would love it to be. It is like food. There are certain meals you do not eat, not because they are bad, but simply because they are not for you. Our field is the same.
He added that his use of English is a deliberate move to reach audiences beyond Uganda.
I chose to use English in my skits because I want people from Rwanda or Kenya to understand what a Ugandan is talking about.
