Use Local Talent to Market Ugandan Products, Says Ziza Bafana
Singer Ziza Bafana has added his voice to the ongoing debate surrounding Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz’s performance at the recent Coffee Marathon Concert in Ntungamo.
The event, which was intended to promote Uganda’s coffee, drew widespread attention not only for its noble cause but also for the choice of the headlining musician.
According to reports, Diamond Platnumz was allegedly paid a staggering Ush750 million for his performance, while Ugandan artistes received significantly less.
As a result, many fans and industry players quickly expressed their disappointment, arguing that local musicians were unfairly sidelined in favour of a foreign star.
However, in his response, Bafana took a slightly different approach.
He clarified that Ugandan artistes have no problem with foreign performers.
In fact, he noted that many local musicians admire international stars and draw inspiration from them in various ways.
Even so, he questioned why the organisers chose to feature a Tanzanian artiste as the headliner for an event meant to promote a Ugandan product.
He went on to highlight that in Tanzania, similar national events are typically headlined by their own local artistes, not outsiders.
“When Tanzania was launching their electric trains, they used their own artistes to perform and promote. Why did they not call Jose Chameleone to perform, since he also sings very well in Swahili? Are you telling me that Diamond sings better than Chameleone in Swahili?” he said.
In conclusion, Bafana believes that events aimed at marketing national products, such as coffee, should focus on celebrating and showcasing local talent.
