Victor Kamenyo Says Musicians Understand People Better, Deserve Seats in Parliament

The 2026 general elections have ended, and several Ugandan musicians who tried politics have lost their races.

Notable names include Geoffrey Lutaaya, Nina Roz, Dr. Hilderman, Victor Kamenyo, and Tuff B.

The results have sparked a loud question online: Is the public rejecting the idea of musicians in leadership roles, and should they stick to music?

But Victor Kamenyo, who lost the Rubaga North MP seat to Abubaker Kawalya, says the conversation is missing the point.

Speaking to Sanyuka Uncut, the rapper insisted that politics is not about one’s profession, but ideas.

To back his argument, he pointed to global figures who have juggled careers in entertainment and sports with leadership roles.

I think it is all about ideas. We have seen George Weah, who was a football player. We have seen Pacquiao, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the 38th governor of California, and many more. It is all about ideologies.

Kamenyo also argued that musicians can actually make strong leaders because they are close to the people and understand their daily struggles.

He cited Bobi Wine’s transition into politics as an example, saying it was easier because he had long been singing about issues affecting citizens.

Musicians, in fact, are perfect people to be in parliament because they are always among the people, and they debate for the people. That is why it was easy for Bobi Wine to go into parliament, because he knew what was hurting the people and used to sing about it. Musicians are vehicles of public emotions, and when we go to parliament, our main role is to represent the people. So, I think a musician is the perfect fit for parliament because they know people’s problems. We even know what makes people happy. I think it would be better for artistes to be in parliament.

Despite the losses this election cycle, Kamenyo believes musicians still have a place in politics, as long as they have the ability to represent the people.
