VJ Junior Hints at Retirement from Movie Translating

When it comes to translated movies from English to Luganda, one name that consistently stands out is Mary Smarts Matovu, popularly known as VJ Junior.

Over the years, he has grown into one of the most, if not the most, beloved movie translators in Uganda.

His unique voice and witty commentary have transformed countless movies into unforgettable experiences for local audiences.

But despite his popularity and long-standing success, VJ Junior may be preparing to step away from the microphone.

Speaking to Daily Soup, he revealed that retirement is something he is seriously considering.

Anytime. Even today, you might be shocked to find out that I have stopped translating movies.

He explained that the thought of retirement does not scare him, thanks to the financial planning he has done over the years.

I have made my investments, but I am just a private person. I cannot come out and say, ‘I have this, I have done that.’ I do not need to say that.

While he is thinking of stepping back from movie translation, he made it clear he is not ready to exit the film world altogether.

Leaving movie translation does not mean that I am leaving the film industry. I can stay active in the movie industry, but as a producer or a director.

VJ Junior also took a moment to address younger Video Jokers who worry that his continued presence might overshadow their rise.

All I can ask of them is not to lose hope. Those who are coming up should rest assured that I will be retiring from translating movies very soon.

He wrapped up with a word of encouragement for the next generation, urging them to be aggressive when promoting their work just as he was when he started out.
