Why GNL Turned Down Collaborations with Chameleone and Bebe Early in His Career

Rapper GNL Zamba recently reflected on a time early in his career when he turned down collaboration offers from established artistes Jose Chameleone and Bebe Cool.

He explained on singer Crysto Panda’s TikTok Live that his vision for hip-hop did not align with those musical pair-ups.

I had a vision for hip-hop, and I did not want people to say that it came up because of those collaborations.

GNL added that many people around him at the time, especially his manager, did not understand why he declined these opportunities.

He believes that Chameleone and Bebe Cool might have felt disrespected by his decision, but he clarified that this was not the case.

It was not out of disrespect because I really admire these people. I just designed my career in a way that I did not want people to say I came up because so-and-so helped me.

He further stated that his goal was for Ugandan hip-hop to rise on its own merit, not because musicians outside the genre collaborated with hip-hop artistes.
