Why R&B Beats Afrobeats Every Time, According to Lydia Jazmine

During a recent appearance on the Ugandan Boy Talk Show, singer Lydia Jazmine was asked to choose between two music genres: Afrobeats and Rhythm and Blues (R&B).

While Afrobeats dominates global music, she picked R&B without hesitation.

R&B! What? R&B! Come on! I am a 90s baby.

As she explained her love for the genre, Lydia revealed that it is also one of the reasons she is so close to fellow singer Melissa Mulungi.

Actually my kind of music… Me and Melisa, that is one of the reasons we are very close. We are best friends because we have a lot in common. You will always find us listening to the 90s, the 2000s, at any time.

The “You and Me” hitmaker highlighted how timeless R&B is, and how much joy it brings her.

I could listen to that music all day, every day, without getting tired. And I think the other way round, I could get tired of a song. I mean we have so many classics from R&B. We are oldies babies. Any day, any time. And even when you play them now, they hit different… like they are new. This is a forever thing. They do not fade. Everybody knows that.

She also reflected on how music has changed, contrasting the longevity of R&B classics with today’s hits.

That music will never go away. We found it, we are leaving it, and everybody will leave it for everybody or generations. These days music has changed. A song will hit for three months and disappear.

R&B clearly has Lydia Jazmine hooked. What about you? Which genre could you defend with the same passion?
