Joshua Baraka on Pursuing Music Against Family Expectations

Fast-rising Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka has shared the story behind his journey into the music industry and how his family, especially his parents, reacted to his choice of career.

Given his religious family background, many would have expected his parents to be hesitant about his music ambitions, particularly since his style is not entirely gospel.

However, Joshua explains that although his parents had doubts at first, they remained open-minded and willing to see how far his music career could go.

“Initially, it was not easy, but they were willing to see where it would lead, and I feel that is the most important thing,” he said during an appearance on the In My Opinion Podcast.

He also revealed that his parents had different plans for his future.

“They wanted me to become a doctor, and I wanted to be a neurosurgeon because, when I was younger, I watched Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” he shared.

Despite choosing a path outside the medical profession, Baraka’s music career is steadily rising, earning him recognition both locally and internationally.

Today, he proudly shares that his parents are fully supportive of his musical journey and celebrate the success he is achieving.

“They definitely support me. They pray for me,” he ended.
