Social Media Fame Can Never Replace Real Talent — Nkem Owoh

A growing number of Nollywood actors have questioned whether talent still comes first in the industry. Nkem Owoh sees things differently.

The veteran actor recently addressed claims that filmmakers increasingly cast actors based on social media popularity rather than acting ability.

During an appearance on the SelahMeditate podcast, Owoh rejected the idea that online fame poses a threat to talented performers.

I do not think social media fame is replacing real talent. It cannot. There is no way social media fame can replace real talent.

His comments arrive at a time when several actors have spoken publicly about casting decisions in Nollywood.

Some performers have accused filmmakers of placing greater value on social media influence, appearance and public image than on acting talent.

Owoh, however, believes genuine skill will continue to earn recognition, regardless of trends within the industry.
