Nathalie Makoma Says Early Fame Cost Her Childhood Ahead of Kampala Concert
Nathalie Makoma, singer for the legendary Congolese gospel group Makoma, has revealed that her meteoric rise to fame came at a steep personal cost.
She made the revelation during an interview on NBS TV’s After 5 show as the group prepares for their long-awaited concert this Friday at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
Nathalie said she “never had childhood friends” and “never really played.”
Instead, from age seven until the year 2000 she “spent my life on stage and on airplanes.”
The revelation offers rare insight into the childhood behind some of Africa’s most recognized gospel songs.
Makoma is back in Uganda for the first time in 25 years as part of New Vision’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The group shot to fame across Africa in the early 2000s with hits such as “Napesi,” “Butu Na Moyi,” and “Mokili Ekobaluka.”
Next Media has partnered with Vision Group for the celebration through NBS TV, Sanyuka, and Afromobile.
