WhatsApp to End Support for Outdated Phones Starting May 2025: Full List Inside

If you are still holding on to that old phone, it might be time to upgrade.

Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, has announced that the app will stop working on some older phones starting May 5, 2025.

According to Meta, the changes are meant to improve the app’s security, introduce better features, and make sure it runs well on newer devices.

For iPhone users, this update means the end of the road for models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

These phones cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7, yet WhatsApp now requires iOS 15.1 or higher to continue working.

So even if the phones still work fine, WhatsApp is moving on.

Android users got hit earlier. Back on January 1, 2025, WhatsApp stopped working on phones running Android KitKat and older versions.

Some of the affected phones include the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, and Galaxy S4 Mini.

Motorola users with models like the Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, and Moto E 2014 were also affected.

Phones from HTC like the One X, One X+, Desire 500, and Desire 601 didn’t survive the cut either.

LG users with the Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, and L90, as well as Sony users with Xperia models such as Z, SP, T, and V, were also affected.

If your iPhone runs iOS 15.1 or higher, or your Android phone runs Android 5.0 and above, there is no need to worry.

WhatsApp will continue to work as usual and you will keep getting all the latest updates and features.

However, if your phone is on the affected list, it is important to check your settings to see if there is a software update available.

If you are lucky and an update is possible, you can install it and continue using WhatsApp.

But if your device has reached the end of the road and cannot be updated anymore, it may be time to finally say goodbye and get yourself a newer model.
