Johnny Drille Defends Performing Outside Gospel Music

Nigerian singer Johnny Drille says his music has grown beyond traditional church boundaries, even as his faith remains strong.

Speaking on the CreativiTEA podcast, the Mavin Records star explained that while he loves God and is active in church, his songs were never meant exclusively for religious settings.

He finds performing in church interesting but says his music is intended to reach a wider audience.

Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting. But I never really felt my music was for church.

Johnny Drille also addressed criticism from some members of the Christian community who question his performances in church.

He pointed out that even though his songs are not strictly gospel, they carry meaningful messages and positive values.

I have received some backlash whenever I perform in churches. But my music spreads positivity and touches on subjects the church often avoids.

Johnny Drille is especially focused on the topic of love, a theme he believes is both important and spiritual.

He argued that the church often shies away from conversations about love, leaving secular artistes to fill the gap.

You go to Christian weddings and hear Davido or Wizkid songs. Why not have the church make its own love songs?

Known for his soulful lyrics and heartfelt performances, Johnny Drille’s perspective challenges the idea that faith and modern music must always fit neatly together.
