Abtex Says Greed Drives Some Artistes to Organize Their Own Concerts

Abbey Musinguzi, popularly known as Abtex, has weighed in on the growing trend of Ugandan musicians organizing their own concerts instead of working with promoters.

On NBS After 5, the outspoken promoter argued that there is nothing unusual about artistes taking charge of their own shows, noting that several established musicians have successfully done so over the years.

Abtex pointed to artistes such as Mesach Semakula, Geoffrey Lutaaya, and Bebe Cool as examples of performers who have handled their own concerts.

Some people just get it wrong. It is not a must that every event has to be organized by a promoter. We have musicians here who organize their own events, like Mesach Semakula. All his concerts at Serena and Africana were organized by himself. Geoffrey Lutaaya organizes his own events. The same goes for Bebe Cool.

According to Abtex, there are several reasons why some artistes choose to bypass promoters.

He suggested that financial considerations often play a major role in such decisions.

It is a two way thing. Sometimes an artiste does not want anyone else to eat off them, or the amount of money they want promoters to give them is not available. Thirdly, it is just greed. You are an artiste and you do not want anyone else to eat off you.

Despite describing some of the decisions as greed, Abtex maintained that artistes are free to stage their own events if they choose.

There is no problem with that, and it is not a must that every event in the country has to be organized by a promoter.
