Adekunle Gold Declares Wife Simi Nigeria’s Best Songwriter

Adekunle Gold has described his wife, Simi, as a rare talent whose songwriting ability stands above everyone else in the Nigerian music industry.

Speaking to American radio personality Angela Yee, the Afrobeats star praised Simi’s creative process and revealed that her approach to music still surprises him despite years of working closely with her.

Rather than settling for one idea, Adekunle Gold said Simi often writes several completely different songs using the same beat before choosing the final version.

Nobody writes songs like Simi. I have never seen somebody write about 10 songs on one beat before. I have seen other artists work, and whatever they drop on a beat at the moment feels like the right one. But writing different songs on the same beat, it must be sui generis.

He added that some of her biggest records went through multiple versions before release, including her hit song Duduke.

Simi has written too many songs on one beat, and most times it is maybe the fifth one that would be released. She wrote about three different versions of ‘Duduke.’

According to Adekunle Gold, that level of songwriting depth is something he has rarely seen from other artistes in the industry.
