Aroma Remembers Her Early Music Days: Balaam Paid Well, Abitex Defaulted
Aroma has opened up about her early experiences with event promoters, highlighting both the support and challenges she faced on her journey to success.
Reflecting on the start of her music career, the singer, born Kyavaerimukama Aroma, shared that Balaam was one of the promoters who gave her a significant boost.
She recalled a performance where Balaam paid her a fee that made her realize music could actually pay off.
“Balaam had a show at a beach in Entebbe on a public holiday. He paid me my money, and it was enough for someone just starting out. That is the money that made me say to myself, ‘Oh! People pay this kind of money,’” she revealed.
However, not all her encounters with promoters were positive.
The “Yoola” singer also shared another early experience involving promoter Abbey Musinguzi, popularly known as Abitex, which did not go well.
According to her, Abitex booked her for a show at Freedom City but failed to pay her after the performance.
She explained that they had agreed on a performance fee that reflected her worth at the time, however small it was.
Trusting his name and reputation in the entertainment industry, she agreed to perform without receiving a deposit.
To her disappointment, that respect and trust was abused.
“After performing and packing up, we waited backstage. He paid all the other artistes whose managers were assertive, but when it came to me, he was shady, and to this day, he has never paid me,” she recounted.
