Aziz Azion Explains Why Old Songs Never Go Out of Style

Ugandan musician Aziz Azion believes the secret behind a song’s longevity lies in the reason artistes create it in the first place.

Reflecting on the difference between classic records and many of today’s viral hits, Aziz said older generations of artistes often wrote about experiences that people could relate to for years.

Themes such as love, struggle, hope, family, and community gave those songs a lasting connection with listeners.

That connection keeps many of those records alive at weddings, family gatherings, and on radio stations long after their release. Musical styles may change, but the emotions behind the songs continue to resonate across generations.

According to Aziz, the modern music landscape operates differently.

With social media trends appearing almost daily, artistes often feel pressure to move quickly and capitalize on whatever captures public attention at the moment.

He pointed to phrases such as “Ekiki Gwe” suddenly taking over online conversations. Once a phrase catches on, musicians may rush to build songs around it, hoping to ride the wave while it lasts.

For a time, the formula works. The song spreads across TikTok, fills nightclub playlists, and becomes part of everyday conversations. But when the next trend arrives, audiences shift their attention and the excitement fades.

To illustrate his point, Aziz compared music to planting a tree. Trend driven songs, he said, are like grass that springs up quickly after rain but disappears just as fast. Songs created with purpose are more like mango trees. They take longer to grow, but years later they still provide shade.

For Aziz, that is the difference between a temporary hit and a timeless song. One follows the moment. The other outlives it.
