Cassper Nyovest Shuts Down Amapiano vs Hip-Hop Comparison

Amapiano may be running the charts, but not everyone agrees that it has pushed hip-hop aside.

For South African rapper Cassper Nyovest, the whole comparison misses the point. Instead, he does not see a rivalry, and he does not think there ever was one.

Speaking in a recent interview, he argued that hip-hop’s current position should not be seen as a fall. Rather, in his view, the genre has simply returned to what it has always been.

He pointed out that hip-hop never fully belonged to South Africa, even at its peak. At the same time, he described that era as a moment the culture created, not a permanent shift in sound.

That stance stands in contrast to ongoing concerns around amapiano’s dominance. As the genre continues to shape the mainstream, some artistes have started to question its pace and impact.

For instance, Nadia Nakai has raised concerns about how quickly new acts enter the space, suggesting it makes it harder for audiences to connect.

Meanwhile, DJ Speedsta has pointed to a different issue. He believes constant exposure to the same sound could push listeners to look elsewhere, even as he acknowledges amapiano’s global success.

So while the debate continues, the real shift may not be about one genre replacing another. Instead, it may come down to how each sound finds its place as the scene keeps evolving.
