John Blaq Says He Has Outgrown His Youthful Approach to Music

John Blaq says fans should not expect him to make the same youthful music that launched his career nearly a decade ago.

The singer explained that his evolving sound is a deliberate choice as he looks beyond short lived hits and focuses on building a lasting legacy in music.

While chatting with Sweden-based Ugandan blogger Peng Peng, he said Mozey Radio’s career continues to inspire the direction he wants to take with his music.

I admire Mozey Radio a lot because I also want to become a legend. There is music you make for the moment, and there is music you make that becomes timeless.

After nearly a decade in the industry, John Blaq believes growth should naturally shape the way an artiste writes and approaches music.

For the years I have spent in the industry, I am almost hitting 10 years. Right now, I am at eight. Do not expect me to be doing the things I did when I was just starting out. There has to be growth in everything we do.

Part of that thinking comes from watching artistes like King Saha, whose audiences continue to show up in large numbers even when they do not have the biggest song of the moment.

I look at artistes like King Saha and the way he sings, and the audience he has. Even if he does not have a current hit song, he will go on stage and people will still come in large numbers.

For the Tukwatagane hitmaker, building that kind of longevity starts with evolving both his songwriting and outlook.

For me to achieve something like that, I need to start now and improve my pen, my style, and my thinking because we are growing older. Back then, it was a youthful approach. I joined the industry when I was around 23. Now I am 29, heading for 30. So there are things I must put in place so that even when I am old, people can still play my music and enjoy it.
