Ray G Says Originality, Not Copying, Will Grow Ugandan Music
Singer Ray G has called on Ugandan musicians to develop a distinct sound that reflects the country’s identity instead of relying on styles borrowed from other African markets.
Appearing on NBS After 5, Ray G argued that Uganda’s music industry can only compete internationally if artistes embrace originality.
He said attempting to replicate sounds from countries such as Nigeria and South Africa puts Ugandan artistes at a disadvantage.

If we imitate Nigerian or South African music, we will never beat them at their own game. We need a sound that is uniquely ours and can represent Uganda on the global stage.
Ray G believes Uganda’s cultural diversity provides artistes with enough inspiration to create music that stands out beyond the country’s borders.
With those strengths already in place, he believes authenticity offers a better path forward than imitation.
