Three Years Away from Turning 50, Jose Chameleone Quits Alcohol and Cigarettes

Ugandan music legend Jose Chameleone is taking a bold step toward a healthier lifestyle as he approaches his 50th birthday.

Now 47, the iconic singer, born Joseph Mayanja, announced while in Kenya for routine medical check-ups that he is leaving behind alcohol and cigarettes as part of a fresh start in life.

Reflecting on his journey, Chameleone shared that the turning point came after undergoing major surgery on his pancreas during a four-month stay in the United States.

This near-death experience gave him a new perspective on life and shifted his priorities.

“God has given me another chance,” he said, describing himself as reborn.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Chameleone is determined to prioritize his health and well-being, putting aside all unhealthy habits.

Chameleone returned to Uganda from the United States on April 12, 2025, and was warmly welcomed like a hero at Entebbe International Airport.

Fans gathered to cheer him on as he walked out of the terminal, looking noticeably stronger and more determined than before.

While the road to full recovery is still ongoing, with follow-up treatments and medical evaluations ahead, Chameleone says his mindset has shifted.

He now wants to live longer, feel better, and be more present, not just for his family, but for his music and fans as well.
