Tiwa Savage Shares Struggles of Being a Woman in Music
Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has exposed the harsh realities female artistes encounter.
Speaking at Entertainment Week Africa’s panel, she revealed that some opportunities come with the expectation of sexual favors.
She shared that she was often asked to meet influential male executives personally before being considered for shows.
In one instance, she lost an endorsement deal after refusing to travel to Dubai with a company co-owner.
The decision cost her financially but allowed her to maintain her integrity.
These experiences made her realize that some industry figures value appearance over talent.
Her skills and hard work were often overlooked, while her body became the focus.
I was told that if I did not meet a certain chairman in person, I would not be booked for a show. I also lost an endorsement after refusing to travel to Dubai with one of the company’s owners. That was when I realized they valued my body more than my talent, which I had only showcased as part of my branding. It was hurtful because that was all they seemed to notice.
