UK Plans Social Media Ban for Children Under 16
Children under 16 could soon lose access to some of the world’s biggest social media platforms in the UK.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a nationwide ban that would block under 16s from using apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, X and YouTube.
Starmer said the move is necessary because social media can expose children to bullying, harmful content and unhealthy online habits. He argued that the government has a responsibility to step in and protect young people.
I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children, and that is why this ban must happen, and why this ban will happen.
The proposal goes beyond social media. Ministers also want tighter controls on gaming and livestreaming platforms, particularly features that allow children to communicate with strangers.
The government expects the new rules to come into force next spring if lawmakers approve the legislation.
