How Don Jazzy Helped Tiwa Savage Reinvent Her Sound

Tiwa Savage has shared how difficult it was to switch from R&B to Afrobeats after returning to Nigeria in 2012, even though the move later shaped her career.

The singer, who once worked abroad as a backup vocalist for George Michael and Mary J. Blige, said she came back home at a time when the Nigerian music scene was growing fast.

She soon joined Mavin Records, a move that proved important for her development.

Speaking in a recent interview, Savage explained that adapting to a more local sound was not easy at first.

However, she credited Don Jazzy for helping her expand her mindset.

According to Tiwa Savage, the producer encouraged her to see talent as something flexible rather than fixed. That shift pushed her beyond her comfort zone and opened her up to new sounds.

Looking back, Savage said she has no regrets about returning to Nigeria or embracing Afrobeats, describing the transition as a defining step in her journey.
