Mr. P Shuts Down Fans Calling for Him to Retire From Music at 44

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, better known as Mr. P, has responded to calls from some fans who believe he should retire from music.

The former P-Square star recently faced criticism from people who argued that, at 44, he is too old to continue making Afrobeats music. Mr P strongly disagrees.

During a chat on The Beat FM Lagos, the singer said music is not a profession with a retirement age.

We should be careful of how people try to put others down. There’s no retirement in music. I do not know why some people think there’s retirement in music.

Mr. P pointed to Michael Jackson as proof that artistes can continue working for decades.

Michael Jackson was over 50 and was still planning a world tour before he died. It is only in Nigeria that somebody would just wake up and start calling on musicians to retire.

The singer also noted that he has seen similar criticism aimed at Wizkid.

For Mr P, age should never decide when an artiste stops making music.
