KCCA, NEMA Raid Popular Kampala Bars Over Noise Pollution

Several popular bars along Ggaba Road have been hit by a fresh crackdown as Kampala authorities intensify efforts to tackle noise pollution.

The operation, carried out by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), saw officials raid a number of entertainment venues in Munyonyo, Bunga, and Kasanga.

Among the affected establishments were Jolly Bar, Nomad, Pili Pili, and Paradigm.

Authorities confiscated 153 speakers from nine venues across Makindye Division during the enforcement exercise.

According to NEMA, the operation followed repeated complaints from residents who said excessive noise from nearby bars was affecting their daily lives and disrupting their rest.

NEMA joined efforts with KCCA in helping carry out raids on these bars so that the nearby people can have good rest during the day and night and be able to execute their work with little noise.

Officials say the exercise is far from over and have warned that more venues could face similar action if they fail to comply with noise control regulations.

So far, we have reached out to four bars in Kasanga, Munyonyo, and Bunga. The bars affected are Pili Pili, Nomad, Paradigm, and Jolly. The raids are still ongoing to make sure that everyone we requested to control noise pollution plays their role in doing so.

The latest operation comes after KCCA Executive Director Hajat Sharifah Buzeki announced stricter enforcement of noise pollution regulations earlier this year.

At the time, Buzeki warned that businesses and entertainment venues exceeding the legally permitted noise levels would face enforcement measures if they ignored the regulations.

Under current standards, noise levels in busy urban areas should not exceed 75 decibels during the day and 50 decibels at night.

Authorities are now urging venue owners to take corrective action before they become the next targets of the ongoing operation.

We encourage all businesses and entertainment venues violating these standards to comply.

With the crackdown expanding across Kampala, KCCA and NEMA say they remain committed to reducing noise pollution and protecting residents from noise pollution.
