Lagum Reveals How He Found His Way Into Rap Music

Lagum has opened up about how his journey in music began long before he became one of Uganda’s respected alternative hip-hop voices.

The rapper, singer, songwriter and producer, whose real name is Lagum Owor, shared his story during an appearance on KFM, revealing that he first fell in love with making music rather than rapping.

According to Lagum, he started experimenting with music production at a young age using GarageBand and FL Studio.

From when I was young, I was pretty much producing music. When I was 12, I was producing music on GarageBand and FL Studio. At the time, I was not even doing rap. I was just producing and singing over the sounds I was making.

His musical direction later changed after discovering some of hip-hop’s biggest names.

Then I kind of got into Lupe Fiasco, Eminem and Lil Wayne, and those guys really put me on. After that, I started trying to write my own stuff, and eventually I realized this is actually not that hard. It came naturally to me.

What started as a curiosity soon turned into a calling.

That’s pretty much where I started, and ever since then, I have been writing and rapping.

Lagum officially launched his solo career in 2014 before releasing his debut project, Gold and Socialize, in 2015.

Over the years, he has built a reputation for blending rap, Afro-R&B and alternative sounds into a style that has earned him a loyal following across East Africa.
