As Musicians Push for Pay, Azawi Says Play Her Music for Free
As Uganda’s new copyright law takes effect, Ugandan singer Azawi has taken a stance that is already stirring conversation.
Instead of backing the push for tighter control, Azawi told the public they can freely play her music.
“Guys, me as me, I authorize you to play my music for free,” she wrote on X, a post that quickly spread online.
Her message comes just after President Yoweri Museveni signed the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026, law on April 29.
The new law introduces heavy penalties, including fines of up to UGX 50 million and prison sentences of up to 10 years for infringement, as authorities push to protect artistes and enforce payments.
That contrast has not gone unnoticed.
While many artistes are pushing for every play to count, Azawi appears more focused on reach than immediate earnings.

The reaction has been split. Some welcomed her move as a boost for exposure, while others questioned whether it weakens the fight for artiste rights.
In the middle of a shifting industry, Azawi has once again chosen her own lane.
