Joshua Baraka Reflects on How “Nana” Transformed His Life

Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka has opened up about the impact of his breakthrough single “Nana,” describing it as the song that changed everything for his career.

Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast hosted by Joey Akan, Baraka said he released the song on January 20, 2023, after years of consistent effort.

I had been doing music for three years, dropping songs monthly, trying so hard.

He said “Nana” came at a time when many questioned whether Uganda could produce exportable music, and the song quickly shifted that conversation.

Everyone was asking, Is this song really Ugandan? Who is the artiste behind it?

Baraka added that international songs dominated local charts at the time, which made “Nana’s” rise even more significant.

The track went on to top Apple Music Uganda and Audiomack charts and became one of the most Shazamed songs in the country.

It also crossed into regional markets, including West and Southern Africa, expanding its reach.

The momentum grew further with remixes featuring Joeboy, King Promise, and Bien.

Nana trended in Uganda for so long.

He added that the song only dropped from the top spot after Davido released Timeless, showing just how strong its run had been.
