Makindye SS Prom Goes Viral for Bold Costumes and Dramatic Performances
Makindye Secondary School’s 2026 prom became one of Uganda’s most talked-about school events after students delivered a bold African heritage-themed experience packed with creativity, costumes, and cinematic performances.
Held on May 29 in Kampala, the prom featured Afro-fusion dances, Black Panther-inspired tributes, and dramatic red carpet entrances ranging from Egyptian queens and traditional cultural groups to Star Wars generals, characters from movies like Avatar, and horror characters from The Nun, The Mummy, and other movie-inspired looks.
Some students even acted out full scenes on the red carpet, including one couple that arrived dressed like a Roman king and queen preparing for battle, complete with a mini war-themed performance.

Media personality MC Ollo, one of the event hosts from NBS Plus TV, reacted online saying: “You’ve seen prom fashion, but have you ever seen… THIS? Makindye SS Prom 2026.”
Many people praised the prom for embracing African heritage, creativity, storytelling, and imagination instead of focusing only on flashy spending and luxury displays often associated with modern school proms.
However, some critics raised concerns over certain scary costumes, masks, makeup effects, and safety issues related to fire and stage props used during performances.
Still, the event stood out as one of the most artistic and daring prom showcases Uganda has seen in recent years, highlighting the growing creativity among young Ugandans.
